School Resource Officers
A “School Resource Officer” is a sworn law enforcement officer responsible for safety and crime prevention in schools.
The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program at the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office serves multiple purposes aimed at promoting safety, security, and positive relationships within schools. SROs act as law enforcement officers, ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors on school campuses. They help prevent and respond to incidents of violence, crime, or other emergencies, creating a safer learning environment for everyone. SROs serve as mentors and role models, building positive relationships with students and fostering trust between law enforcement and the youth.
They provide guidance, support, and educational resources to students, addressing issues such as bullying, substance abuse, and internet safety. SROs collaborate with school administrators, teachers, and counselors to develop and implement proactive strategies for promoting school safety and addressing student needs.
The main role of the School Resource Officer is the safety and security of the school, school staff, and primarily the students. One of the main goals of School Resource Officers is to actively work on promoting positive relations between youth and law enforcement. The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office currently has 10 School Resource Officers, one per public school in Shenandoah County, including elementary schools as well as the trade school.
School Resource Officers are frequently seen throughout our community, both in and out of the academic setting. Our School Resource Officers play a vital roles in events including the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office Youth Leadership Camp, the DEA Drug Takeback, Fatal Vision, the Shenandoah County Fair, Stuff the Bus, and the Shenandoah County Summer Kick Off Event.
Additionally, School Resource Officers put on various educational courses, such as the Virginia Rules Camp, DARE and RAD.
Every year, the School Resource Officers complete multiple trainings, related to the prevention and response to active threats.
