Auxiliary Deputy Program
The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office manages an Auxiliary Deputy program. Applicants must be 21 or older, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or GED, possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License, and submit to a background investigation. Both positions are non-compensated. Bilingual applicants welcome.
Duties of Auxiliary Deputies include, but are not limited to, assistance with patrol, traffic control, guarding and transports, security, disasters, special events, and other public service assignments. Members must complete a specialized training program.

About the Auxiliary Deputy Program
Complete a “modified” basic law enforcement academy, approximately 3 months long
A few classes are first aid/combat medic training, law, ASP and pepper spray, firearms training, etc.
Classes are usually held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with the exception of a few Saturdays
Open completing the auxiliary academy and scenarios/trainings at the end, they must go through a field training program
Auxiliary personnel can only work with/under the supervision of a certified Deputy and have the same “powers” as a certified Deputy when doing so
To remain a member of the auxiliary program, they must complete a designated number of hours and/or events per year
They must purchase their own equipment
Chaplain Program
The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office manages a Chaplain program. Applicants must be 21 or older, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or GED, possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License, and submit to a background investigation. Both positions are non-compensated. Bilingual applicants welcome.
Duties of Chaplains include, but are not limited to, spiritual and religious assistance and support with special events, disasters, and critical incidents. Specialized training and squad training is available.
