Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is a critical component of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, serving as the backbone of law enforcement within the community.

Patrol officers are often the first to respond to emergencies, including accidents, crimes in progress, and other urgent situations. Their timely intervention can save lives and prevent further harm. Regular patrols act as a deterrent to criminal activity; the visible presence of law enforcement officers helps to reduce the likelihood of crimes being committed. Patrol Deputies interact directly with community members, fostering relationships and building trust.

This community policing approach enhances cooperation between the public and law enforcement, leading to better crime reporting and problem-solving. Patrol Deputies enforce laws and ordinances, ensuring public safety and order, that follow those set forth by Shenandoah County and the Commonwealth of Virginia. They conduct traffic stops, investigate suspicious activities, and make arrests when necessary.

They handle a wide range of incidents, from minor disturbances to serious criminal offenses, ensuring that the community remains safe and secure. Additionally, Patrol Deputies offer support to Investigations, often gather initial information and evidence at crime scenes, which is vital for subsequent investigations. Their observations and reports can be crucial for solving cases.

In addition to law enforcement duties, deputies provide assistance during natural disasters, medical emergencies, and other crises, offering immediate support to those in need. Managing traffic flow and ensuring road safety is a significant responsibility of the Patrol Division. They address traffic violations, investigate accidents, and help keep roadways safe for all users.

Overall, the Patrol Division of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office is essential for maintaining law and order, enhancing community relations, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents. Patrol Deputies engage in community policing efforts, building relationships with residents, addressing concerns, and collaborating with local organizations to address community needs. They play a crucial role in protecting and serving the citizens of Shenandoah County, promoting public safety, and fostering positive relationships within the community.

Responsibilities

  • The Patrol Division is responsible for answering calls for service and providing 24/7 law enforcement services for Shenandoah County.

  • The Patrol Division consists of two patrol squads that work a day shift, mid-shift, and a midnight shift.

  • Each squad is supervised by a Lieutenant and two Sergeants.

  • Each squad also has two Community Service Deputies who provide mental health services.

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office is also responsible for providing law enforcement services for the incorporated towns of Edinburg and Toms Brook on a contractual basis.

Community Service Deputies

Community Service Deputies, or CSD’s, help bridge the gap between citizens challenged with mental health crises and public safety.

Our CSD’s are trained in crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and work directly with local resources, such as the Department of Behavioral Health and Northwestern Community Services.

Our CSD’s take a proactive approach by regularly visiting citizens in need of services. This approach allows our CSD’s to better serve the community by promoting safety, compassion, and support for individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

Ride-Along Program

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office encourages the community to be involved with the law enforcement process. The Ride-Along program allows citizens of the county to observe and be involved in the basic day to day activities and procedures of a Patrol Deputy.
