Courts Division

The primary role of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office Court Division is to provide security to our courthouses, citizens, and inmates.

Our Court Security Deputies are responsible for overseeing access control for both our courthouses and grounds. They work to ensure that only authorized people enter secured and staff-restricted areas, direct citizens throughout our facilities, and provide protection by screening for weapons.

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office Courts Division is essential for maintaining the smooth operation and security of the county’s judicial system.

The Courts Division ensures the safety and security of judges, jurors, court staff, attorneys, defendants, and the public within the courthouse. This includes screening individuals for weapons and contraband and monitoring courtrooms and adjacent areas. By maintaining order during court proceedings, the Courts Division prevents disruptions and ensures that judicial processes proceed smoothly and without interruption. The division is responsible for the secure transport and custody of inmates to and from court. This includes moving inmates from correctional facilities to courtrooms, ensuring they are safely escorted and monitored.

In the event of an emergency or security threat within the courthouse, the Courts Division is trained to respond promptly to protect everyone in the building and mitigate the situation. The division provides direct support to judges, ensuring they have a safe and secure environment to conduct court business. This includes escorting judges to and from the courthouse and their chambers. By maintaining a secure and orderly court environment, the Courts Division fosters public trust and confidence in the judicial system. People are more likely to participate in legal proceedings when they feel safe.

Bailiffs are tasked with maintaining order in the public areas and the courtrooms when court is in session. In addition, Bailiff’s transport and temporarily house inmates while awaiting their court hearings. Our court security deputies transport inmates from jails all throughout the Commonwealth and out-of-state extraditions.

At this time, the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office is only able to provide staff and security to our Circuit Court screening when court is in session.

In summary, the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office Courts Division is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the county's judicial system. Their roles in security, prisoner transport, legal document service, and emergency response ensure that justice is administered effectively and safely.
